Giles Rée Memorial Road Race

27th June 2010 - National B - E/1/2/3

Giles was passionate about cycling. He thrived on the competitiveness and challenge of the race. Giles was one of the founder members of VC Etoile, started in January 1979 by a group of friends who wanted a continental-style club totally focused on racing.

Giles’ fierce determination to succeed and his highly competitive riding style were most obvious in his road racing. Giles always saw things from the competitors’ point of view and was quick to speak out against any perceived injustice. This could bring conflict with officialdom, most notably at Preston Park Cycle Track.

Giles was tragically killed as a result of an accident on the A24 on 21.4.83 while he was out on a training ride. He died in Brighton General Hospital on 3.5.83. In tribute to his strength and ability in road races, VC Etoile dedicated their road race (previously 2-day) to Giles’ memory. The race was run on virtually the same circuit since 1984.

The race continues the tradition of a premier road race over the Sussex downs, in memory of Giles Rée.
